Probably if you own a pet you are most likely aware of the benefits of having a good quality Lint Roller! – and one of the main priorities for many people is how quick and easy it is to use… that’s because when people use them it’s often as they are rushing out of the door and only then notice in the light that they are covered in their pet’s hairs! (Actually, many realise they are also covered in their own hairs usually, but don’t have a product such as a Lint Roller to hand.) This is where the quality of the roller comes in, because if you go with a very cheap one there’s usually no rolling element in the handle at all, which means you do all the hard work! However, if you have a good quality roller the handle will include a spindle which does the rolling for you – it rolls while you hold the handle, and the result is a smooth, quick and very easy rolling action.

After quality the next consideration will be how economical they are. Again, the handle is of great importance because if you bought a cheap one you may soon realise that it’s a false economy when you come to the end of the roller. The handle won’t be removable and you have to throw out the complete product and start again. Some call it shedding, some call it moulting, but it’s all the same thing, and that’s when your dog loses their natural hair for a new coat to come through. Some dogs shed more than others – much more! The most common cause of dog hair loss is seasonal change so you may have a breed of dog that only sheds at certain times of the year, nevertheless you’ll still be suddenly faced with large amounts of hair loss – all over the house! You may be surprised to learn that your dog’s hair loss is also affected by their food – so if you change their food you may notice a change in their hair loss.

Some people believe that frequent bathing for your dog is a good idea, (not only to keep them smelling nice!) but also to prevent so much shedding. Beware though, if you follow the advice form the Collienet professional you will keep this to a minimum…. she’s not a great believer in bathing dogs too frequently because it makes their hair less water tight. When you do wash your dog try to let them dry naturally which is better because the heat from the hair dryer will make them loose more oils – in a similar way that it does for us of course! Naturally, the frequency a dog will need a wash will depend on the breed of dog (length of hair) and what they are doing in between washes! Indoor conditions, such as central heating, plays havoc with a dog’s natural shedding and often means your dog will shed continuously because how can their body register seasonal change sufficiently when living indoors?!

Whilst there’s no way around this, by far the best way to control shedding is to groom them frequently – we are talking every day here and for a minimum of 10 mins. Try making this less of a chore by brushing them when sitting watching telly at night… it makes you more likely to do it! (you could get rid of hairs from your sofa with a lint roller at the same time!) Whilst you may want the undercoat when you are showing dogs, the best way to remove it is to groom frequently… Margaret, the Collienet expert mentioned that on certain breeds the easiest removal is when you can see it lifting from the skin slightly because it comes away more easily then. It stands to reason that removing your dog’s hair before it has a chance to get onto your floor and all over your house is the best method to controlling it. This regular grooming will mean less unwanted hair all over your clothes, carpet and furniture, especially during shedding season.

Whatever you do though you’re going to see some hairs around your house and on your clothes… try to keep on top of it when it starts to appear – don’t leave it until you are next able to vacuum, instead use a Pet Hair Roller to clean up in between vacuuming (see my previous blog on the many uses of the Mighty Lint Remover).  You could also try getting a specialist vacuum cleaner best suited for pet owners to minimise the bulk of hair. Don’t be fooled into thinking that having a dog with short hairs means you won’t have to remove hairs in your home, short-haired dogs could create even more problems when removing hairs than long-haired dogs because short haired breeds have much coarser hair which sticks in fibres and makes it harder to remove… again the Sticky Roller comes to the rescue because it’s brilliant in this sort of situation, see the below review:

Protect Your Pet By:

1 Providing somewhere secure for them to hide… both cats and dogs may want to seek out a quiet corner, but don’t try to tempt that out if they do

2 Closing all windows and drawing the curtains will help, and don’t leave them on their own if you think they are distressed

3 Walking dogs in the day and keep all pets indoors when fireworks are likely to happen

4 Not making a fuss of them if they do show signs of fear and never tell them off for this type of behaviour

5 Providing toys and a play area can help by creating a distraction. Playing with the toy yourself may encourage them to join in, but don’t force it

Obviously vacuum cleaning is a job that can’t be completely skipped, but instead of using it every day why not use some of your own power to get smaller areas clean and for in between days? In many cases this can be easier than getting out the hoover and more effective.

Being the home of the Sticky Roller Brush we are naturally interested in all things relating to pets and as a nation of pet lovers I thought many of you may be interested in a programme coming soon to Sky 1 called ‘Pet Nation’. Starting on Friday 26th March at 8pm this brand new programme is a ten part series celebrating our love of our pets. Liza Tarbuck and Huey Morgan are the hosts exploring the many aspects of owning a pet – looking into alternative therapies for your pets, gadgets, home videos, cooking for cats and dogs(!) and stories from around the world. We’re hoping to get more tips on how to care for our pets (and cope with their hairs!) But continuing with our pet theme (and as I’ve recently been grooming my dog more frequently since Margaret’s tips on grooming!), here’s a run down on how to brush a dog!

For small dogs you can use a grooming table, but larger dogs should be groomed on the floor. Ideally start working on one side at a time and in small sections brush against the growth direction – you can prevent matting by parting the hair down to the skin. When both sides have been brushed, finish by working from head to tail in the direction of the hair growth this time. Using a soft-bristled brush at the end will help to distribute the oils to their hairs.

If like myself you have a dog that is particularly prone to matting you may need to consult a professional groomer (I find that if my dog gets quite matted I have to book a professional groom to get him back to a stage where I can continue my ‘daily’ grooming!) Finishing with a grooming spray will keep the coat nicely conditioned and less prone to matting – and as mentioned in my previous article you can get sprays that smell of Baby Powder too!

This year I’m now thinking of going to the Tatton Park Fun Dog Show, Just Dogs Live and the Okehampton & District Agricultural Show – (I’ll keep you posted!)

We would love to hear your own stories of how you make use of your lint remover, whether a Regular/Trident Handled Pet Hair Remover, Mini Pocket Sized Roller Brush or Carpet Cleaner… we are always interested to hear your tips too and that way other customers can benefit from your wisdom! So we challenge you to tell us a use for the Mighty Lint Remover that we haven’t heard yet! But in the meantime here are just a few uses to get you on your way…

• You don’t really need to be told this one! But just to clarify Pet Hair Rollers are brilliant at removing your pet’s hair (and your own hair) from clothes. The super sticky paper quickly removes any hairs or other debris from your clothing that you often only see in daylight, which is inevitably when rushing out of the door!

• Make it one of the steps you follow when doing your washing/drying. I have certain clothes which are particularly prone to picking up fluff once they have come out of the wash, so I quickly roll over such clothing when dry but before folding… that way they look like new BEFORE I want to wear them!

• Most people find it hard to make time to hoover each day – and who wants to?!… but there are many people like myself that have young children and a dog (or equally bad a cat!) who find they do some cleaning one day and by the following day the carpet looks like it hasn’t been cleaned for a week! Obviously with little time to clean again, this is where my Pet Hair Roller really shows its worth… great for use in between hoovering.

• I’ve been using it recently to clean up bits of mud left on the floor when I take my shoes and wellies off – and when I put them on especially, because it’s then the dried on mud drops to the floor. Not really being in the position to get the hoover out (I’m usually rushing out with my dog), I give the area a quick once over with the roller so I don’t have to deal with it when I get back!
